Sharepoint Central Administration keeps using firefox
In the browser wars there was a turf fight to always become the default browser, everything from reset "me" to be the default to "always check that I am the default"
It was with some surprize that after granting Internet Explorer 8 to be the default browser and assigned what I thought was every extension to IE that Firefox was still the browser that Sharepoint Central Administration (psconfigui.exe) on Windows Server 2008 chose.
After some full registry searches I found the answer. Internet Explorer did not reset the shell class. To fix this yourself start regedit (usual disclaimers apply) from the run option in the start menu.
Next open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, its alphabetical so scroll down to http, Expand that node as in the diagram.
Expand Shell, Expand Open and you will see the entry for command. Modify registry entry and replace c:\program files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe with c:\program files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe
Exit regedit and now Sharepoint central administrator should start in IE
