Problems connecting to a Samba share from Windows or Linux; checklist
by Alan Williamson
Trying to connect to a samba share that looks correct, but keep getting 'Access Denied' error reports. There are a number of things you can check If after setting up a samba share it still doesn't connect then make sure you have done the following:
- The directory in which you are sharing is owned by the samba user you have designated
- The directory has the necessary read/write attributes setup on it depending on your wants
- Make sure the user in which samba is trying to use is the one you expect by keeping an eye on the log file /var/log/samba/
- If running SELinux, then make sure you designate that folder as safe for samba;
chcon -t samba_share_t -R /dir/to/share
- Make sure the /etc/samba/smbusers is mapping to the right real Linux usernames
