Overriding Windows 2008 password policies

The improvement of password protection in Microsoft Windows can only be a good thing. However the tighter restrictions are awkward when integrating with existing environments especially in testing and development. For example there may be a shorter or non-numeric password than the Windows Server 2008 policy now prevents.

There is a simple way to make Windows Server 2008 password policy backward compatible.

First head on over to

Start->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy

Select Account Policies->Password Policy

Right click and select properties on "Password must meet complexity requirements" . Check Disabled and apply

Obviously this leaves the machine at risk but you can move forward while bringing the legacy systems up to password policy compliance.
